Cellar Operator

Location: Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards; Naples, NY

Reports to: Winemaker, VP of Winemaking

Job Location: Naples, NY

Job Overview: Ongoing desire to learn about, excel in and contribute to an environment designed to make world-class quality wines. The right candidate will participate in day-to-day operations and maintenance of the wine cellar and cellar equipment. This position will adhere to the standard operating procedures of our cellars while displaying safe and efficient working habits.

Full-Time (40 hours/wk average)
Hourly wage commensurate with experience.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Under the supervision of the Winemaker, operates cellar equipment including but not limited to storage tanks, transfer pumps and hoses, filtration equipment, chillers, forklifts.
  • Maintains a clean and hazard free wine cellar through general janitorial duties in production buildings, also cleaning and sanitizing tanks, tank fittings, pumps, hoses, fixed process lines, barrels, and all other grape and wine processing equipment.
  • Measures and makes additions to wine and juice after a confirmation of calculations by the Winemaking team.
  • Reads and accurately interprets written work instructions then measures and records routine workplace data during and at the end of work.
  • Monitors and maintains appropriate levels of supplies and materials needed for the successful operation of the cellars.
  • Works closely interdepartmentally with supervisors, managers, and co-workers to ensure proper communication (Bottling, Lab, Maintenance, Management, etc.).
  • Assists and provides recommendations to the winemaking team in regards to the daily and weekly planning of cellar work and operations and improvements to processes.
  • Works closely with the maintenance department to ensure proper repairs and preventative maintenance of cellar equipment are completed on a daily and long-term basis within the cellar operations.
  • Follow safe operating procedures, support safety programs, and policies to safeguard personal safety, product safety, environmental safety, and company property as set forth by Hazlitt’s.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Winemaker or VP of Winemaking.

Qualifications:

  • 2-year enology degree or equivalent work experience
  • Ability to work independently and in teams with minimal supervision
  • Basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing and mechanics
  • Must be self-starters, hardworking, motivated, reliable, and bring a positive attitude.
  • Must be able to bend, squat, kneel, climb and lift 50 lbs.
  • Flexible schedule during September – November grape harvest
